Sunday 3rd July - bike ***** - Levington Marina for breakfast – cloudy with rain.

After discovering that the old barges were racing from Pin Mill this weekend Mag and I decided to head over to Levington Marina with breakfast packed to watch them sail past despite the fact that rain was forecast. We were not sure what time they set sail from Pin Mill a couple of miles up the River Orwell from Levington but in the end set of around 7.45 with the sky gloomy expecting to get wet at some point! We went our favourite tree lined path route and arrived at the seat at the windsurf launch spot by the marina entrance at 8.40 just in time to see the first barge approaching slowly upriver with the other 7/8 barge preparing to leave, so perfect timing:) It was not the most pleasant of breakfasts with a keen breeze around 15 knots blowing in our faces but it was great fun watching the barges plod past with their full set of dark brown sails, I think they only have two speeds, slow and even slower! There was a line of old boats now beating down towards Felixstowe docks so we decided to follow them taking the river path which is now very badly over grown to Trimley Marshes stopping enroute to take photos. Mag checked the winter flood with her binoculars spotting avocets and godwits while I got nice pic of an old barge passing a huge container ship just berthing at the docks! We were hoping to get around to the dock view point in time to se them sail past the container ships, sadly it is a long way to bike around the dock and they had passed. The rain started on the road that leads past the dock to the view point and just got heavier, we got absolutely soaked but it was such a laugh:) You could hardly see the barges as they disappeared into the gloom while heading out to sea so was not worth stopping! Felixstowe prom was like a river and absolutely deserted with everyone in the shelters, we had some great banter with all the people waiting for the rain to clear as we splashed past on our bikes:) Up Bent Hill and home drenched, the wet clothes ere soon in the washing machine while we had a warming cuppa. I was hoping to windsurf later but the arrival of the rain had killed that completely, fingers crossed it returns this afternoon like it did yesterday? We had not been home long before the sun came out so I was able to do my exercises in the back garden, what a top morning, loved getting caught in the rain and lovely to see the old barges too :)
